Jack Asher Legacy Fund

Jack Asher (1943-2017) was a lifelong friend to Cliveden. Passionate about history, preservation, and Germantown, Jack and Carol Asher enthusiastically supported the Battle of Germantown, at Cliveden for 40 years. This event embodies Jack’s dedication to community building, which was reflected in his relationships with the reenactors, neighbors, and local businesses.

The tradition of honoring the Battle of Germantown dates to 1927. One participant during that event was Asher’s Chocolate founder C.A. Asher, Jack’s great uncle, whose candy and chocolate store was located on Germantown Avenue in 1896.

The Battle of Germantown reenactments that began with Jack’s support in 1977 are now the centerpiece of the annual Revolutionary Germantown Festival, educating and entertaining more than 5,000 people annually who come from the community, the country, and all over the world. As Jack knew, staging two Battle reenactments with more than 300 historic reenactors requires enormous effort and financial support. For four decades, Jack generously donated the funds required to mount the Battle, and served as its honorary “Commander-in-Chief.”

Jack’s wish was that the Battle of Germantown reenactments continue to commemorate and educate people about Northwest Philadelphia’s place in history for decades to come. To ensure the Battle’s future, Cliveden has launched the Jack Asher Legacy Fund. All memorial contributions will directly support the Battle of Germantown and Revolutionary Germantown Festival. Thank you for your generous gifts in memory of Jack Asher.
